There’s been a lot of buzz online about a new rule in Sweden that says dogs shouldn’t be left alone at home for more than six hours without meaningful interaction, exercise, or a walk. Whether or not it’s strictly enforced like a traditional criminal law, it’s part of Sweden’s strong animal welfare protections — and it reflects a growing global recognition that dogs need social contact, physical activity, and mental engagement throughout the day, not just at bedtime.
Unlike some countries where leaving a dog alone for an 8–10 hour workday is everyday life, Swedish regulations encourage — and in some interpretations require — that dogs are engaged with people or other animals and given purposeful exercise at least every six hours. Dogs are social beings with emotional and physical needs; long hours alone can lead to stress, anxiety, and behavioral problems.
This “six-hour rule” might sound tough — especially for anyone juggling a 9-to-5 job, commuting, school runs, or other commitments — but it highlights something important: your dog’s wellbeing matters.
We get it —
You love your dog. You play with them before you head out. You give them toys and treats. But when you’re gone all day? That’s a big ask for a dog.
A dog’s day isn’t the same as ours:
Dogs don’t understand work schedules — they understand time passed alone.
After a few hours of isolation, they can become bored or stressed.
Lack of regular interaction and activity can lead to destructive behaviors, anxiety, or even health issues.
So what’s a responsible dog owner to do?
At Dogland, we’re passionate about helping owners give their dogs the daytime care, stimulation, and social interaction they need — especially on those long workdays.
🐾 All-Day Supervision
Your dog won’t be left alone — we’re here to ensure they’re watched, played with, and cared for throughout the day.
