Why do I need to know?

It is important to know as much as possible about your potential pets or common traits your dog may have.  Here at Rose Cottage we make it our priority to ensure we have the knowledge and we want to share that with you.  

There are some breeds we are unable to take, which is much to our regret, but we have to make sure every dog can enjoy the facilities here at Rose Cottage.  The way we care for your dogs would make it impossible to offer this to some breeds, due to the nature of the dog breed, but also the care that breed may need.     

We will always recommend the best, to our knowledge, place to take your baby.  If we find we are unable to take your dog.

Types of Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds

Have you noticed how everyone calls all boxy-headed dogs “pit bulls?”

Why is that?  The term itself is nondescript, borrowed from the name of the American pit bull terrier, though it is often applied to all boxy-headed dogs, no matter their breed!!  There are few dog breeds that have as much misidentification as the pit bull. 

This is particularly unfortunate, as pit bulls and bully breeds are the victims of countless myths, misunderstandings, and negative media coverage. So, they all tend to get painted with the same unflattering and broad brush.

There are several bully breeds commonly labelled “pit bulls”.   These dogs may share similar heads and ancestral similarities, but they’re all different dogs!

Let’s take  look at some different types of bully breeds.  There are 4 basic types of pit bulls.  

• Four dog breeds are commonly lumped together and called “pit bulls.” This includes the American pit bull terrier, the American Staffordshire bull terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, and the American bulldog.
• A wider umbrella term — “bully breed” — is applied to these breeds and about eight others. This group (which we’ll cover below) includes all of the “pit bulls” as well as eight other blocky-headed pooches.
• Many of these breeds share similar ancestries, but they’re all distinct breeds, with varying characteristics, tendencies, and needs. We’ll share some info on each of these breeds and try to highlight their differences below.
